Welcome to Nihongo Nepal (“the App”, “we”, “our”, or “us”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, disclose, and protect your information when you use the Nihongo Nepal mobile application.

1. Who We Are

Nihongo Nepal is developed and operated by Nihongo Nepal, based in Kathmandu, Nepal.

2. Information We Collect

Information You Provide

Phone Number

We collect your mobile phone number to:

• create and identify your account;
• authenticate you using a One-Time Password (OTP);
• maintain your login session.

We do not require your email address, or other personal profile information to use the App.

Institute Enrollment

If you access Nihongo Nepal through a language institute, your account is linked to that institute.

Your institute may manage:

• your enrollment;
• assigned lessons;
• quizzes and examinations;
• attendance;
• learning progress.

Your instructors or institute administrators may view your learning progress and examination results to support your education.

Learning Data

To provide your learning experience, we store information such as:

• completed lessons;
• lesson progress;
• flashcard progress;
• quiz and examination scores;
• conversation practice results;
• learning history;
• download preferences.

This information allows you to continue learning across devices and enables your institute to monitor your progress where applicable.

Information Collected Automatically

Firebase Analytics

We use Firebase Analytics to understand how learners use the App.

Examples include:

• lessons viewed;
• flashcards studied;
• exams attempted;
• features used;
• navigation within the App.

Analytics data helps us improve the quality of the App and educational content.

Firebase Crashlytics

If the App encounters an error, Firebase Crashlytics may collect technical information such as:

• device model;
• operating system version;
• application version;
• crash logs;
• installation identifier.

This information helps us identify and fix technical issues.

Crash reports do not include your phone number.

Microphone Access

Conversation Practice requires access to your device’s microphone.

Your spoken Japanese is processed using your device’s built-in speech recognition service (Google on Android or Apple on iOS).

Nihongo Nepal:

• does not record your voice;
• does not permanently store voice recordings;
• does not upload voice audio to our servers.

Speech recognition may be subject to Google’s or Apple’s own privacy policies.

Information Stored on Your Device

Offline Lessons

If you choose to download lessons for offline learning, videos and audio are stored securely on your device using encrypted storage.

These files are only accessible through the Nihongo Nepal application.

Secure Login

Your authentication token and phone number are stored securely using platform-provided encrypted storage (Android Keystore or iOS Keychain).

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• authenticate your account;
• deliver educational content;
• synchronize your learning progress;
• provide institute-assigned lessons and examinations;
• enable offline learning;
• improve the App;
• monitor performance and fix technical issues;
• communicate important service notifications.

We do not use your information for targeted advertising.

The App does not include advertising SDKs.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

Where applicable under privacy laws, we process your information because:

• it is necessary to provide the services you request;
• it is necessary to maintain the security of your account;
• we have a legitimate interest in improving the App;
• we must comply with applicable legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information.

If your account is managed through an institute, authorized instructors and administrators may access your:

• enrollment information;
• lesson progress;
• examination results;
• attendance records.

Service Providers

We use trusted service providers to operate the App, including:

• Google Firebase Analytics
• Firebase Crashlytics
• Google or Apple speech recognition services

These providers process data only as necessary to provide their services.

Legal Requirements

We may disclose information where required by law or where necessary to protect our legal rights.

Learning records may continue to be retained while you remain enrolled with a participating institute.

Where required by law, certain records may be retained for longer periods.

8. Account Deletion

You may request deletion of your account at any time.

Deletion requests can be made by contacting support@nihongonepal.com OR by contacting your institute.

We will process deletion requests within 30 days, unless a longer retention period is required by law.

If your account is managed by a language institute, deletion may also remove your enrollment and learning history.

9. Children’s Privacy

Nihongo Nepal is an educational application and may be used by learners of all ages, including students enrolled through schools or language institutes.

We collect only the information necessary to provide our educational services.

Parents, guardians, or institutes who believe that a child has provided inappropriate personal information may contact us for review and removal where appropriate.

10. Data Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including:

• HTTPS encrypted communications;
• encrypted authentication storage;
• encrypted offline lesson storage;
• secure cloud infrastructure;
• controlled access to learner information.

Although no security system can guarantee absolute protection, we continuously work to safeguard your information.

11. International Data Transfers

Some of our service providers, including Google Firebase, may process information on servers located outside Nepal.

By using the App, you acknowledge that your information may be transferred and processed in countries where these providers operate.

Depending on applicable law, you may have the right to:
